Video Cable scams

My dad's purchase of Dish Network's hd service and subsequent last minute purchase of an overpriced HDMI cable (he was aware, just impatient to get his cable), led me to the realization that many people still think you need to spend 30-150 bucks on a digital cable. Monster cable makes bose look like honest marketers. Not just Monster cable, but the giant profit margins on the cables they sell make lots of money for the electronics stores who push these cables. Think this through for a minute. Why should some wire, shielding, and two connectors cost the same as an iPod Nano. For high end analog cabling where signal loss is an issue the answer is in materials.
