Of all the hobbies to get interested in...

It had to be photography. I had to catch the photo bug. Heather thought playing videogames was expensive, but I haven't shown her the lens upgrades that will be coming in as my girls grow up.

Here's the cheap list on what will be upgraded and in what order. I say cheap because the sigmas and tamrons are third party lenses that cost about 1/3rd as much as their Nikon counterparts.


  • Nikon sb-600 Speedlight

  • tripod

  • lightstand (tripod for the light)

  • clamps

  • radio trigger

  • Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD
    . (they just updated it so it'll autofocus with the d40)

  • Sigma 10-20mm

  • Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF-S VR

  • Body Upgrade... probably to the successor to the Nikon d80

  • Another flash and lightstand

  • Nikon 50 1.8

  • A macro tube

  • Probably a Sigma or Nikon 70-200 2.8

  • Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 (this would make a decent portrait lens so I've heard)

  • Some teleconverters for the 70-200


    • My thought process ends here... but 5 years from now when I get here I'm sure the list will grow even more. What a terrible thing to pick up as a hobby.

Running simplescalar on Ubuntu in alpha config

I have to post this for future reference as there were so many pain points just getting simplescalar running that I needed to mirror some links and consolidate some tutorials. Phoebe loves shoes

OMG Shoes. Phoebe loves them. At any given moment Phoebe is either swapping shoes, trying on shoes, or digging through someone's closet for new shoes. Our recent trip to Bryan, TX to visit family, brought us to a children's play museum. There was a small selection of dress up items which of course included shoes. Phoebe immediately began prancing around in her new shoes. 59585|400 Heather wanted some pictures of Phoebe in her cousins boy clothes as well. I Don't Mind

I don't mind the rapid spreading contagion of nerdity (I made the word nerdity up, which I think makes me a nerd. A fact that was never in doubt). My only lament is her hesitance to adopt my music. Seriously, I listen to some awesome music. Every week I find new bands, new sounds, and every once in a while I find gold. The only problem is that I've trained myself to like the weirdest stuff I can find. For example: [audio:01-unexpect-chromatic_chimera.mp3] The band is called uneXpect. They're probably considered metal but they have a certain jazz/circus music/opera influence. They're similar to Sleepytime Guerilla Museum but much heavier.
