What I listened to in 2008

Todd, my brother-in-law, has posted a list of his favorite 75 songs released by different artists during 2008. An impressive list to say the least.

I poured over my last.fm rss feed to locate what new material had crept in in 2008. I've found 50-60 new releases to evaluate for the best songs. This is going to take a little while.

Here's the artist breakdown.

Right now my iPod is loaded with the new albums from the above artists. I'm listening linearly instead of using shuffle and rating them as I go. Once I've got a song from each of the above albums I'll make a new playlist and rate them based on my favorites. I'll be truthful to my tastes. Normally I try and limit exposure to my musical tastes, but limiting the list based on how palatable the music is to anyone else wouldn't create a list that's mine.

    I always knew that your tastes were eclectic, but it's remarkable seeing the evidence in a compressed paragraph. It's also interesting to see where our lists of musical encounters intersect; it's not always in places I would have anticipated. But it does make me feel like my tastes are much more static than yours, especially when I see your choices ranging from experimental classical (if such a thing can be) to indie to folk to metal, which is entirely absent from my listening (the only consolation is that I don't listen to anyone who could plausibly name an album something like, say, "The Rape of Tinkerbell.")

Running simplescalar on Ubuntu in alpha config

I have to post this for future reference as there were so many pain points just getting simplescalar running that I needed to mirror some links and consolidate some tutorials. Here's a good guide to installing simplescalar . I'll mirror some of the information from another guide that worked for me as well. Phoebe loves shoes

OMG Shoes. Phoebe loves them. At any given moment Phoebe is either swapping shoes, trying on shoes, or digging through someone's closet for new shoes. Our recent trip to Bryan, TX to visit family, brought us to a children's play museum. There was a small selection of dress up items which of course included shoes. Phoebe immediately began prancing around in her new shoes. 59585|400 Heather wanted some pictures of Phoebe in her cousins boy clothes as well. I Don't Mind

I don't mind the rapid spreading contagion of nerdity (I made the word nerdity up, which I think makes me a nerd. A fact that was never in doubt). My only lament is her hesitance to adopt my music. Seriously, I listen to some awesome music. Every week I find new bands, new sounds, and every once in a while I find gold. The only problem is that I've trained myself to like the weirdest stuff I can find. For example: [audio:01-unexpect-chromatic_chimera.mp3] The band is called uneXpect. They're probably considered metal but they have a certain jazz/circus music/opera influence. They're similar to Sleepytime Guerilla Museum but much heavier.
