Goodbye thumb

Phoebe found great comfort in sucking her thumb. She is however aware that it has damaged her teeth and produced a slight overbite. Prior to yesterday it was quite common to find Phoebe sucking her thumb with her blanket nestled snugly against her cheek or nose. This has now changed.

We discussed with Phoebe the perils of continued thumb sucking and why she should try and quit. She acknowledged the problems and did try to stop, but unfortunately her will faltered in the face of discomfort, sadness, or sleep. "It tastes good," she would comment.

We decided to change that particular fact. 2 days ago the Mavala Stop arrived. Fundamentally it's terrible tasting nail polish. It works. Phoebe is doing wonderfully. She is not saddened at no longer sucking her thumb and as it turns out only needed a constant reminder that it was time to quit. Apparently it's a particularly foul tasting reminder as she went through 2 juice boxes and quite a bit of milk yesterday solely as a result of lapses that led to aggressive palate cleansing on her part. She is wistful in the face of this change but it hasn't made her sad or even frustrated. She talks a bit more than she used to, however, which we really don't mind.
