Time

5 Days ago I finished the last class I needed to complete my BS in Computer Science from the University of North Texas. I admit it seems small compared to some of the achievements of friends and family but I still feel proud I was able to hold on for dear life for so long. A decade of evening classes and late night coding dozens of different class projects and homework assignment in arbitrary languages has taken a little bit of a toll.

Sophia and Phoebe hate college. Over the years I told them that I didn't have any time to play because I was doing homework. My family, this blog, our photographic memories, and even more forgotten things have fallen by the wayside on the journey. There was not a single moment that I wasn't also employed full time trying to provide for my family throughout my college experience. It took a toll on our marriage during heavy semesters as it became impossible for me to assist around the house in the way I would have liked and the way that Heather needed.

I didn't know there was another way when I started. Had I known I would have concentrated solely on school right after my mission. My FAFSA and Scholarship apps would have been filled and I would have wearied the student accounting services department of whatever school I attended. I can't whine about my circumstances too much, I probably wasted 3 years by being a terrible student and taking breaks when my children were born.

Hopefully I can convince my daughters that their college experience will be different.

Next up: Get back in shape, College application for Heather, Be a Dad, Decide on a technology stack for my personal project.

  1. Congratulations on finishing. It is more of an achievement, in my opinion, than finishing a degree as a single person with no kids. Spencer started back to school and then we decided NOT to go on for all the reasons that you listed. So extra congratulations to both you and your family for making it through.
