Top Gear Season 8 Episode 8

It's up . Get it while it's hot. I haven't even watched it yet :( I have a final tonight. Edit: Whoops. I apparently jumped to #2 in google search results for this one, and I'm not intending the uploads to be general purpose (I mainly do it to help out my dad in getting his "favorite TV show") If you know me in real life, then you know my e-mail. E-mail me and I'll give you the password. If you don't, then I'm sorry. I suggest using bittorrent and the links at finalgear.com to download. Happy surfing.

Top Gear Season 8 Episode 7

New Episode is up . Sorry, I'm about a week late with this one.

This Must Have Taken a While

Awesome stop motion video featuring live versions of various videogames.

Israel's Track Record

I don't want to post in anger, or appear to be an anti-Israel zealot. There are answers that we need and the US has turned a blind eye to the mistakes of Israel in the past . After the recent mistake made by the Israeli military it becomes more and more difficult to understand why the US continues it's unchecked support of Israel. Now let me say that I'm not condoing the abolishment of the Israeli state, or even suggesting that Israel did not have the right to protect it's borders, but their lack of precision in killing actual members of Hezbollah brings into question their true stance with relation to Lebanon. It seems that they wish to incite horror into the populace of Lebanon to scare the state into action. They fail to understand that the continued reckless aggression being shown will only solidify the middle-east againt them. They are even begnning to draw the ire of the UK and US . I can't criticize Israel without also pointing out that Lebanon contin...

Half Life 2: Portal Gun

I hate to be a videogame shill, but this is beyond awesome. I can't wait to use this thing in multiplayer.

I've Found More Music to Love

I picked up Buckethead's latest CD about 4 months ago or so. I started raving about it at work, which led a friend of mine to find out that Buckethead was playing here in Dallas. We bought tickets and had a blast at the show. The highlight (for me) was actually his opening act, Kid Beyond . I suggest checking Kid Beyond out. He does some amazing stuff with live looping and beatboxing. Anyway, back to Buckethead, On his latest CD "Enter the Chicken" there's a track called Coma. Coma features a ethereal alto singing over Buckethead's guitar. I looked up this woman, and discovered Azam Ali . I picked up three of her CDs and have been enthralled ever since. I still need to pick up her latest CD but have been thoroughly enjoying her latest collaborative project, Niyaz . If you had to put it in a genre, I'd put it somewhere between Persian world music and new age, sort of a sad Arabic Loreena McKennit. Give the first track of Niyaz a listen. [audio:01%2...

I Love Music

Lately I've been retagging my mp3 files using tag&rename . Combine this with finding a "diamond in the rough" of music procurement, and I've been busy enjoying some new stuff that came out. The first two that pop in my mind are Jurassic 5's new album which is missing alot of the energy that was present in their previous albums, and Cut Chemist's solo venture, which explains where all the energy went (Cut Chemist left J5 last year). If you're not into hip-hop, then you won't know what I'm talking about, but that's okay because I have a suggestion for the rock guys. You may want to check out Comets on Fire's latest CD "Avatar". It has an upbeat 70's rock vibe to it, with a lot more complexity and a lot less production than your typical rock band. Here's some samples from each album. [audio:12%20-%20Red%20Hot.mp3] Red Hot: from Jurassic 5's new album. (My current favorite track) [audio:04-cut_chemist-the_garden...

Political Timestamp (more fear)

I'm just doing this for future reference, since I refine my political opinion quite often, I thought it prudent to capture some thoughts on current happenings in the world. Also this might help my fan (Hi Mom) understand when I am being sarcastic. I'm sort of a moderate libertarian in my overall political view. I enjoy living in a free society, and I truly love America. I like being able to speak out/protest/support whoever I wish without facing imprisonment or death. I acknowledge the sacrifice of our troops. Those who are against our current conflict still fight because they made a commitment, and those who die, I honor, no matter the cause, because I feel they made a commitment to their view of America. If they are used inappropriately then that falls on the heads of those who know the whole picture and order them into battle. That being said, I believe Iraq, specifically, to be an ill-advised war. My current understanding is that we invaded in order to secure a stab...

The Hot Seat

Image
I'm not sure that I believe this screen print of my weather widget, but I had to post it. Life has been pretty typical on the homefront, and without turning on the news, going outside, or looking at your electricity bill you might think everything was normal. Sophia smiles, laughs, coos, and generally tracks anything she's interested in until the object of her interest is out of sight. Work is great, but to be honest, I probably won't be writing much about it because blogging and work, generally, do not mix. I will say that I enjoy not getting 80 phonecalls a day. Everything is just peachy at home, provided my house doesn't cave in due to the water restrictions in place. Jennifer(Heather's oldest sister) is in town so I'm spending some time with her and her kids, while planning for a final at the end of this month. I've already signed up for classes next semester, and to be honest I'm a little intimidated by my discrete math course. We'll see h...

Top Gear Season 8 Episode 6

Sorry I'm late with this one. Dreamhost has been wonky the last few days but anyway, the episode is up.

2 Month Checkup

Well, by the time I was able to get her 2 month appointment Sophia is more like 2 months and almost 2 weeks......But the measurements would have been the same regardless. I am happy to report that BJ and I have a large, healthy child. She weighed in at 12 lbs, 3 oz and was 24 1/2 inches long. Her length puts her in the 95th percentile!!! The doctor and nurse kept asking me if my husband was tall or if there were tall people in our family. Nope! The doctor said if she were average length she would look like a chubby/fat baby but because she is so long her weight right now is proportianate to her length. I forget the percentile for her weight but it was up there as well. In fact, the medicine I had to give her after her shots was the dosage for 4 month olds. She was given 5 individual shots, which I was NOT happy about. Surprislingly, when she cried her head off I did not fall apart. I held up really well, stroked her head, and calmed her down minutes after it was all done. B...

Tutorial: Automatically Download Your Favorite TV Shows

Image
This is a relatively easy and short tutorial for downloading your favorite shows via bittorrent. When Sophia came along, Heather and I decided to cut back on some expenses. Up to that time we had been using DirecTV and TiVo to record and watch all of our favorite shows. This was about 70 bucks a month. Lo and behold, we could get basic cable for about 15 bucks a month. The main problem was, we couldn't time shift our favorite shows anymore. So I found a free solution. Read on for the details This tutorial uses the BitTorrent client uTorrent , and the web scraper RSS site tvrss.net . Please note that you can use almost any torrent feed imaginable to supply yourself with television shows. My purchase of an HDTV and Home Theater PC has moved a lot of my feed downloads to a tracker that specializes in high definition content.

Bekah's Conspiracy

The invention of the phone is just a government conspiracy to oppress and kill millions of Americans.

Xbox Soft-Mod Guide

Image
Everyone with an Xbox should modify it. It's amazing. You'll be able to emulate almost every home console from the N64 and playstation 1 on down. My favorite homebrew application is Xbox Media Center . You can use it as a Remote Media Player that will play anything from Xvid to mp3s over your home network. Modifying your Xbox to run unsigned code without installing a modchip, can be accomplished in various ways. You can run unsigned code by using a hacked save file on an exploitable game. You can run unsigned code via bugs in the MS Dashboard (the green screen with the orb that your Xbox boots into if you start it without a game in the tray). We are going to use a combination of both, in order to modify your Xbox, so it will run unsigned code by default. It's actually very easy to do, so hit the jump for the full tutorial.

I'll Get to it Later

I typed one whole line of my Xbox soft-modding tutorial before I got distracted by upgrading everything on my own xbox then transferring it all to Bekah's. I did however get all the screenshots and pictures that I need to make a decent tutorial, while soft-modding Bekah's Xbox. I also have a nice bunch of files uploaded with no links for the eventual tutorial. So my Xbox sits with a clean install of emulators for CPS1, CPS2, NEO-GEO, SNES, Genesis, Mame, NES, TurboGrafx-16, Game Boy Regular and Advance, Sega Master System, Atari 2600 and 5200, Coleco, Commodore 64, Game Gear, Lynx, MSX1 and 2, and Neo Geo Pocket. I have a fresh install of Xbox Media Center and am currently trying to get an Xbox port of Mugen running. I'll have the tutorial up soon, maybe Tuesday.

Superman Returns, as a Crybaby

Image
I feel bad that I didn't like Superman Returns. My wife enjoyed the movie, but when I asked her what she enjoyed in the movie, she explained, "The emotional scenes. Like when Lois Lanes family is trapped in the boat, or when Lois is crying over Superman in the Hospital." The problem is that both of those emotions are emotions we identify with secondary characters in the movie. My problem with the movie was that, I wanted to feel like Superman. I wanted to identify with him; just like every six year old who has donned a cape, I wanted to be able to pretend. In Superman Returns, he's nothing but an alien. The most Superman like character in the movie is actually Richard White, Lois' husband/boyfriend. Yes I know, he lacks powers, he's just a human, but when Lois asks him to turn back and possibly sacrifice himself and his family to help someone else, he does. Even against his own desire to be Lois' sole love, he turns around for his wife. Superman ...
